Tool #1 The POD Process
Successful presentations are planned and organized in a different way than they are delivered.
By using these 12 steps, in this specific order, you will be able to quickly create presentations that will be well organized and that are more likely to present a clear and concise message.

PLAN

Begin the process by planning your presentation. The planning phase has 4 steps.

1.  Clarify your purpose - First, you need to clearly define the purpose of your presentation and determine what you want your audience to take away from your presentation.
2. Analyze the audience and the situation - Do an in-depth analysis of your audience and any situation factors that will affect your presentation. You look at things such as: who will be there, what their priorities and opinions are, where you'll be presenting, how long it will be, etc.
3. Brainstorm content - Use one of five brainstorming techniques to generate ideas for the body of the presentation.
4. Select main points - From your brainstormed ideas, you select the main points you want your audience to understand and act upon.

ORGANIZE

After planning, you move on to the second phase of the POD process and organize the body of your presentation. The organizing phase has 5 steps.

5.  Organize main points - Choose one of two organizational formats, one for an informative presentation and one for a persuasive presentation.
6. Support main points - Add clearly stated arguments to convince your audience of your main points.
7. Prepare introduction and conclusion - Yes, this does come after organizing and supporting because now you know the material you want to introduce, and you can conclude with what you want your audience to remember and do.
8. Prepare visuals - Create visuals that clarify your organizational pattern and that emphasize your purpose.
9. Complete the Speaker's Outline - Use all you've learned about planning and organizing a presentation to complete an outline of your presentation. Use that outline to facilitate your delivery.

DELIVER

The third phase, the delivery phase, discusses the many aspects of delivering your presentation effectively.
In this phase you will focus on such topics as managing stress, some of the verbal and nonverbal aspects of delivery, how to manage a question and answer session, and how to practice effectively. This phase has 3 steps.

10. Manage Stress - Manage the stress of presenting and use it to your advantage
11. Improve Delivery - Learn about presentation styles and techniques including verbal and non-verbal delivery strategies and how to effectively manage a Q&A session.
12. Improve Practice - Learn an effective practice process. Practice verbal/nonverbal skills and presentation preparation tips.
