Effective Writers Have A Clear Purpose In Mind

clarify

Either your purpose is to INFORM or to PERSUADE.

Clearly identifying your purpose helps you clarify the goals of the email. It also allows you to begin to focus on the organizational format of the email, because informative and persuasive emails have fundamental organizational differences.

Informative Emails
Are designed to improve the reader's understanding of a concept, process, or principle.

Persuasive Emails
Are designed to bring about change in thought, belief, or action.

Emails often have both informative and persuasive elements. Drawing lines between informing or persuading is less important than determining what the outcome of the email should be:

  • What do you want your reader to know?
  • What do you want your reader to do?
  • What do you want your reader to feel?
