Reviews and Excercises

One Minute Of Planning Can Save Ten Minutes Of Writing

One reason we have difficulty writing is that we often fail to adequately plan our emails. Upon receiving the writing assignment, we begin a frustrating cycle of thinking that involves:

  • What should I say?
  • How should I say it?
  • What ideas should I include or exclude?
  • How long should it be?
  • When is it due?
  • What format should I use?

These questions and others lead directly to our real enemy: PROCRASTINATION.

Proper planning isolates each of these issues and then deals with them separately and systematically. Proper planning takes much of the pain out of writing and often results in fewer rewrites. Many writers simply write too soon!

Effective planning requires a thoughtful analysis of:

The PURPOSE of the email
The READERS of the email
The CONTENT of the email

This unit explores how to deal with these three critical planning issues.
